How To Unblock an Outside Drain

guide to unblocking outside drains

A blocked outside drain in your street can quickly become a nuisance. Not only can it affect your home, but the whole street can be affected – however not everyone will want to offer solutions for it. Calling someone out to unblock your drain can be expensive or might seem like a drastic move if you believe you can unblock it yourself. If you want to give it a go before calling the professionals, here are some simple tips to help you when unblocking outside drains by yourself!

Find out what’s causing the blockage

Most drains get blocked by debris that has fallen down from the street, which could include leaves, grease, or discarded rubbish. Once you’ve figured out what’s causing the problem you can easily determine how you will have to tackle the issue, including the tools you’ll need to unblock the drain.

Find the tools you’ll need and get started

Once you’ve decided to have a go at unblocking your outside drain yourself, you should make sure you’re wearing the proper protective clothing as well as buying or borrowing some drain rods.

From here you’ll have to remove the drain cover (probably with a screwdriver if there isn’t an accessible handle) and take a look inside the drain. If the drain chamber is filled with water then the blockage will be somewhere below it – you should be able to find the blockage by working your way along the chamber.

Make sure you’re wearing protective gloves and plunge your drain rod into the drain chamber, continuing until you can feel that you’ve dislodged the blockage. Make sure you always turn the rod in a clockwise direction slowly while pushing it deeper – don’t spin it anti-clockwise as you could end up unscrewing the drain’s plunger attachment.

After unblocking the drain manually, you can simply run some clean water through it which should rinse away any remaining debris and stop any blockages building up again in the short term. You can then turn on your taps from inside your house and let them keep running for about three minutes so that you can be sure the water is running as normal. Then, pour some bleach down the drains so that you can be certain they’re as clean as possible.
